The Power of Potentized Complementary Medicines at Nanoscale for Infectious Diseases Management

This study explores the effectiveness of Homeopathy in managing infectious diseases, focusing on its integration with nanoscience. The key objectives include assessing the role of homoeopathic treatments in reducing morbidity and mortality from various infections, such as respiratory, gastrointestinal, and mosquito-borne diseases, and examining the scientific mechanisms behind its therapeutic effects.

Key findings from the study include evidence of nanoparticles in highly diluted homoeopathic solutions, suggesting that these remedies may retain measurable amounts of the original substances. This nanoparticulate perspective bridges traditional homoeopathic practices with modern nanomedicine. Historical evidence, such as Hahnemann’s work on scarlet fever and recent studies during the 2006 Chikungunya epidemic, supports the effectiveness of homoeopathic treatments, demonstrating improved recovery rates and reduced complications with integrated homoeopathic and allopathic approaches.

The main conclusion of the study is that Homeopathy, particularly when combined with nanoscience, holds significant promise as a complementary approach in the management of infectious diseases. The presence of nanoparticles in homoeopathic remedies may explain their therapeutic effects, positioning Homeopathy as a valuable component of holistic healthcare strategies, especially in developing countries.

Infectious diseases remain a major public health challenge in developing nations, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality due to poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding, and limited healthcare access. Diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and diarrheal infections are prevalent, with emerging threats such as Ebola and COVID-19 exacerbating the burden. According to the World Health Organization [1] and Global Burden of Disease Study [2], infectious diseases account for over 50% of total DALYs (Disability-adjusted life- years) in low-income regions. Control strategies include vaccination programs, improved sanitation, vector control, and global health initiatives to mitigate the impact [1,2]. The growing burden on healthcare systems has prompted the need for innovative and complementary approaches to disease management through integration of Alternative systems of medicine with Modern Allopathic medicine as seen in the landmark PISCOV Trial [3]. Homeopathy has gained attention for its potential in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with infectious diseases by acting on the Vital Force (The concept of ‘Vital Force’ is a traditional homeopathic principle describing a vitalistic energy, within its philosophical context.) in living beings as demonstrated through experimental and experiential evidence by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann [4]. Recent advancements in nanoscience offer a scientific explanation for the efficacy of homoeopathic remedies, bridging traditional alternative medicine with modern biomedical science.

There is substantial evidence supporting the presence of nanoparticles in homeopathic remedies, offering a scientific basis for their efficacy. A pivotal study by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, utilized Transmission electron microscopy to detect nanoparticles of the original substances in highly diluted homeopathic solutions. Using market samples of metal-derived medicines from reputable manufacturers, it has been demonstrated that Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction and chemical analysis by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES), can detect the presence of physical entities in these extreme dilutions, in the form of nanoparticles of the starting metals and their aggregates. These finding suggests that, contrary to prior skepticism, homeopathic dilutions retain measurable amounts of the starting materials, potentially explaining their therapeutic effects [5].

All medical systems administer treatment in measurable doses that typically adhere to Avogadro’s limit. However, homeopathic medicines exist in both measurable (hormetic) and ultra-diluted (beyond Avogadro’s number) forms [6]. These medicines are prepared through potentization or trituration in three potency scales—Decimal (X), Centesimal (C), and Millesimal (LM). Each step in the dilution process reduces the original concentration by factors of 10, 100, and 50,000, respectively. A mole of any substance consists of 6.022 × 10²³ molecules. Conventional medicine typically functions at micro-molar (10⁻⁶M) and nanomolar (10⁻⁹M) concentrations, equivalent to 6X/3C and 9X/4.5C in Homeopathy. With each successive dilution, the concentration of the active substance diminishes significantly. At a 23X potency, molecular presence theoretically decreases to approximately six molecules, further reducing to less than one at 24X. In Centesimal dilution, 11C retains 60 molecules, while 12C reduces this number to less than one. Even at these minuscule concentrations, research suggests that single molecules can trigger biological chain reactions, influencing specific cellular functions.

Studies have confirmed that homeopathic dilutions up to 23X/11C/LM4 contain nanoparticles of the original substance. These nanoparticles exhibit pharmacological activity by interacting with biological systems. The presence of nanoparticles explains the observed therapeutic effects of homeopathic medicines beyond Avogadro’s limit [7].

The concept of nanodoses in Homeopathy dates back to 1801 when Samuel Hahnemann described the prophylactic use of Belladonna for scarlet fever. He outlined a method of dilution that reduced the substance to a 1/24,000,000 concentration. Hahnemann recommended administering a single drop containing approximately 0.0416 nanograms of Belladonna every 72 hours. His methodology, now recognized as an early form of nanomedicine, predates the formal discovery of Avogadro’s limit in 1860 [8].

Homeopathic dilutions beyond Avogadro’s number are commonly referred to as super-Avogadro or highly potentized dilutions. Modern research confirms that nanoparticles persist even in highly diluted solutions, providing a scientific basis for Homeopathy’s mechanism of action [7].

Emergence of nanomedicine

In a paper published in 1801, Hahnemann mentioned the prophylactic properties of Belladonna for the treatment of scarlet fever as well as the method of preparation for potentized Belladonna to 1/24,000,000 dilution[8]. He wrote, “we dissolve a grain (1 grain = 0.06479891 grams) of this powder … in one hundred drops (1 drop = 0.05 ml)of common distilled water, by rubbing it up in a small mortar; we pour the thick solution into a one-ounce bottle, and rinse the mortar and the pestle with three hundred drops of diluted alcohol (five parts of water to one of spirit), and we then add this to the solution, and render the union perfect, by diligently shaking the liquid. We label the bottle strong solution of belladonna. One drop of this is intimately mixed with three hundred drops of diluted alcohol by shaking it for a minute, and this is marked medium solution of belladonna. Of this second mixture one drop is mixed with two hundred drops of the diluted alcohol, by shaking for a minute, and marked weak solution of belladonna; and this is our prophylactic remedy for scarlet-fever, each drop of which contains the twenty-four millionth part of a grain of the dry belladonna juice.”

Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann recommended the administration of one drop which is equivalent to 0.0416 Nano grams of Belladonna and to repeat the dose every 72 hours. This represents one of the earliest recorded uses of Nano-doses in medical treatment. Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann is credited with the method of preparation and prescription of Nano-doses of medicine.

In 1805, Hahnemann crossed Avogadro’s limit (Avogadro’s limit was however unknown at that time, it was discovered only in 1860), and the 18c potency appears for the first time. Homeopathic medicines above Avogadro’s limit are known as super-Avogadro dilutions [9] or potentized high dilutions.

Findings and methodology of the research done by incorporation of Carica papaya extract in gold nanoparticles

Recent progress in nanoscience has provided a compelling framework for understanding the mechanisms behind homoeopathic remedies. Experimental Research carried out at Dayalbagh Educational Institute (D.E.I), Agra at Faculty of Integrated Medicine AYUSH and Siddharth Hospital, Agra has identified the presence of nanoparticles in highly diluted homoeopathic solutions, indicating that trace amounts of the original substance may persist even at extreme dilutions. This nanoparticle-based perspective offers a scientific rationale for the biological effects observed in homoeopathic treatments, suggesting that these nanoparticles may interact with biological systems to trigger therapeutic responses. By aligning traditional homoeopathic principles with modern scientific insights, this approach positions Homeopathy within the evolving field of nanomedicine.

Further reinforcing this connection, studies have explored the integration of nanotechnology with Homeopathy through eco-friendly synthesis methods. One significant study demonstrated the use of Carica papaya homoeopathic mother tincture in synthesizing gold nanoparticles (CpAuNps) through a rapid and sustainable process. These nanoparticles exhibited notable therapeutic benefits, including a measurable increase in platelet count (12%) and improvement in complete blood count (CBC, 9%) in dengue patients. The underlying mechanism was linked to the activation of genes such as ALOX12and PTAFR, which play a crucial role in platelet production. This synergy between Homeopathy and nanoscience underscores its potential in addressing complex medical conditions, such as thrombocytopenia, through innovative and integrative approaches [10].

The present study warrants the synthesis of gold nanoparticles using Carica papaya homeopathic mother tincture in a rapid single green process. Gold nanoparticles synthesized using Carica papaya homeopathic mother tincture (CpAuNps) have been thoroughly characterized for their optical property, surface morphology, crystalline lattice, particle size, and zeta potential using UV-Vis spectroscopy, FE-SEM, XRD, and DLS and monitored for enhancement in platelet count and Complete Blood Count (CBC).

Findings and result

Clinical trials, per regulations laid down by the Central Council of Homeopathy, were performed on 30 patients (Age: 15 - 20 years) suffering from dengue fever. Their blood samples were collected at regular intervals under the supervision of the Medical Officer. Blood smears were prepared every alternate day to evaluate hematological parameters (platelet count) and CBC. The treatment of CpAuNps depicted statistically significant enhancement (p < 0.05) in platelet counts and effective maintenance of CBC in the normal range.

The increase in platelet count and maintenance of CBC may be attributed to the activation of the gene expression of ALOX12(arachidonate 12-lipoxygenase or platelet-type lipoxygenase) and PTAFR (platelet-activating factor receptor gene), enhancing the number of megakaryocytes. Such metabolic changes are likely due to the result of induced green nanotechnological modifications involving high surface area-to-volume ratio, bio-compatibility, and astonishing optical properties related to surface plasmon resonance [10].

Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer: The optimized experimental conditions of bio-fabrication of gold nanoparticles were as follows: CpMT (2 ml), sodium tetrachloroaurate dehydrate solution (3 ml; 1 mM) and sonication (45 min; 50 KHz) at pH 6.8. It was found that at 2:3 ratio of CpMT and NaAuCl4.2H2O solution had a maximum absorption band at 543 nm (Figure 1).

Search for nanoparticles in homeopathic solutions

The presence of molecules of the original substance beyond Avogadro’s limit was first mentioned in the French book Recherché expérimentale moderne en homéopathie (Modern Experimental Research in Homeopathy) authored by Maurice Plazy and Robert Mergerin in 1967 [11].

Research carried out by a team from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) and published in Homeopathy (Elsevier) in 2010 indicates the presence of 1 - 4000 Pico grams/milliliter of fine nanoparticles (5 - 15 nanometer size) of the original starting material (one molar concentration) in 200c (dilution of 1 part in 10 raised to 400 parts) potency of metal-derived homeopathic medicines. This study [12] concluded that by using transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and atomic spectroscopy it is possible to measure the quantity of nanoparticles found in homeopathic medicines which retain their potency even when diluted to a nanometer or one-billionth of a meter.

In an article published in The Times of India, the third largest circulating newspaper in the world, dated 16 Dec 2010 titled: “IIT-B Team Shows How Homeopathy Works”, the co-author of the paper and Head of Chemical Engineering Department at IIT-B, Dr. Jayesh Bellare, said, “Homeopathy has been a conundrum for modern medicine. Its practitioners maintained that homeopathic pills got more potent on dilution, but they could never explain the mechanism scientifically enough for modern scientists” [13].

In his lecture, “Homeopathy as Nanomedicine”, at the World Homeopathic Congress 2011 [14], held in New Delhi, India from 1 - 4 Dec 2011, Dr. Jayesh said, “Even the highest dilutions of remedies have left signatures of respective original molecules in their nanoparticle form, when subjected to electron microscopy studies, validated later by wavelength analysis.” He related how the succession process could ‘break the quantum domain’ of a medical substance and accelerate-decelerate protein activity, like electro-magnetic waves do.

But what about potencies greater than 200c. Do the potencies above 200c fall under the ambit of nanomedicine? As of now it has not been possible to quantify the amount of active ingredient in potencies above 200c. Logically potencies above 200c should contain even less amount of active ingredient.

Research carried out jointly by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D) and the Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (Government of India) and published in the International Journal of High Dilution Research in 2011, indicates the presence of crystalline nanoparticles (100 nanometer) in 15c potencies of plant-derived homeopathic medicines. They used energy dispersive X-ray analysis, selected area nanodiffraction and trace element analysis to determine the presence of nanoparticles [15].

Research in the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-Kharagpur), published in Journal of Analytical Methods in Chemistry [16] found the presence of biologically active digoxin-like substance in Digitalis Purpurea 30c and 200c. They used Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Cyclic-Voltammetry to determine the presence of active ingredients [16].

A study [17] published in 2012 in Langmuir found that nanoparticles of six original medicinal agents persisted in 6c, 30c and 200c solutions and explained the process by which these nanoparticles are transferred and retained beyond Avogadro’s limit which has been documented with high speed videography. They also found 325 nanoclusters of lactose.

Research in the Department of Chemistry, Ramnarian Ruia College, Mumbai in 2013 using dynamic light scattering technique confirms 13.8 nanometer size particle in Terminalia Arjuna Mother Tincture [18]. This study shows that the dose of medicine required is reduced by orders of magnitude when it is in nanoparticle size which is in conformity with the principles of Homeopathy.

Nano-pharmacology

Homeopathy is, in fact, a form of nano-pharmacology [19], medicine are prepared through a specific pharmacological process of potentization/trituration. Trituration (repeated grinding with lactose powder) is carried out by pulverization in a grinding machine. This results in breaking down of medicinal substance obtained either from natural plant or animal source (Sarcode or Nosode), or natural occurring element or compound or synthetic material prepared in laboratory, into nanoparticles. Nanoparticles have biological activity. Nanoparticles in homeopathic medicines exert biological effects on the body. Nanoparticles can cause hormesis [20]. Hormesis is an adaptive response that is induced by stimulation at low doses and inhibition at high doses. In fact, this has been scientifically demonstrated in the book “Organon of Medicine” in the year 1801 by Samuel Hahnemann while carrying out his experiments on his own physical frame, where he labelled the main driving entity of these medicines in such a low amount as the “Vital Force”. Further experiments conducted by Kent and Dr. Tom Jansen, further reinforced by the Saints of the highest region, and ultimately led to the evolution of the Super Humane.

The authors of this chapter have done a trial, “A pilot study to assess the effect of Adrenalinum 3X on short term and long-term complications of lifestyle disorders like Hypertension, Cancer, Diabetes, Anti-Social Behavior, Anxiety & Depression”[21]. On the lifestyle disorders whose conclusions are the Adrenaline in infinitesimal small doses i.e., in nano-dose and beyond, when used in Homeopathy as low potency of 3X has proved to be immensely beneficial in controlling the life style disorders like Anxiety, Depression, Anti-Social Behavior, Alcohol addiction, Hypertension, Diabetes, Cancer and their complications. Hormesis is akin to Arndt-Schultz Law which is about non-linearity between dose and response. Hence, it appears that homeopathically prepared remedies may also stimulate a similar response, causing a specific hormesis which, in turn, ensures that homeostasis is maintained, and thus, counteracts illness in a curative manner. The dramatic and super healing properties of these medicines has been pharmacological proven (The concept of hormesis describes a dose-response phenomenon observed in biology. Claims regarding ‘dramatic’ or ‘super healing’ properties of homeopathic medicines require further rigorous scientific validation) in yet another case study in a patient of Ptosis, where Opium 1M was used in nanoscale potencies [22].

Relationship between nanoscale medicines and quantum biology

Living organisms are built of cells that are typically 10 μm across. However, the cell parts are much smaller and are in the sub-micron size domain. Even smaller are the proteins with a typical size of just 5 nm, which, is comparable with the dimensions of smallest man made nanoparticles. This simple size comparison gives an idea of using nanoparticles as very small probes that would allow us to spy at the cellular machinery without introducing too much interference. Understanding of biological processes on the nanoscale level is a strong driving force behind development of nanotechnology.

Nanoscale medicine and quantum biology are two rapidly evolving fields that intersect in several innovative ways, leading to advancements in medical diagnostics, therapeutics, and our understanding of biological processes at the quantum level.

Quantum biology [23] explores the application of quantum mechanics and theoretical chemistry to biological systems where classical physics fails to provide an accurate description. Understanding fundamental quantum interactions is crucial, as they shape the properties and behavior of biological systems at a higher level of organization. Many spiritual traditions describe the attainment of a highest state of consciousness or harmony, such as Quintessential Harmony of Super-Trinity as an aspirational ideal situation. These descriptions reflect philosophical beliefs and veritable scientifically and evolves as gender free Superhumane (“References to ‘Superhuman’ or ‘Ultimate Consciousness’ reflect spiritual or metaphysical beliefs held in esoteric traditions presented here as experiential phenomenon) through integration with omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent Quantum Spiritual Force Field (The term ‘Quantum Spiritual Force Field’ is used here as a philosophical or spiritual concept and is established as an scientific entity in the work of Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner in the books “The Quantum Enigma: Physics Encounters Consciousness”[35], in the work by physicist Amit Goswami “The Self-Aware Universe”, delve into quantum mechanics’ implications for spirituality[36] and in studies on biophotons and their role in cellular communication may serve as a bridge between quantum phenomena and spiritual interpretations. Refer to “Biophysics of Consciousness” by Roman R. Poznanski et al. [37]), the mother of all four natural forces those are- Gravitational Force, Electromagnetic Force, Strong Nuclear Force and Weak Nuclear Force.

Nanoscale medicine involves the application of nanotechnology in healthcare, particularly through the use of nanoparticles to diagnose and treat diseases. One prominent example is the use of quantum dots—semiconductor nanocrystals that exhibit unique optical properties due to quantum confinement effects. Researchers like Warren Chan have been instrumental in developing quantum dots for biomedical applications, enabling high-resolution imaging and targeted drug delivery [24].

Many essential biological processes rely on energy conversion into usable forms for chemical transformations, inherently involving quantum mechanical principles. These include chemical reactions, light absorption, excitation energy transfer, electron and proton (hydrogen ion) transfer, and the formation of excited electronic states, all of which play roles in cellular respiration, photosynthesis, and olfaction. Additionally, quantum biology utilizes computational models to study biological interactions influenced by quantum mechanical effects.

This field focuses on understanding non-trivial quantum phenomena by breaking down biological processes into their fundamental physical components, though such effects remain challenging to study and often speculative. Currently, four key biological processes have been identified as being influenced by quantum effects: enzyme catalysis, sensory mechanisms, energy transfer, and information encoding.

In a seminal paper presented in the conference TSC 2012 at University of Tucson, USA Titled “Quantum mechanics basis of Qubits super-positioning and collapse of wave in RAS (Reticulo Activating System) neurons” the role of quantum phenomenon in the emergence of consciousness and its role in sustainability of life [25].

In yet another paper Biophotons and Magnetoreceptors in Red Blood Cells(RBC): The Conscious Conversation wherein the author studied Magneto-receptors inside red blood cells in the blood of humans which possess like in animals and birds some unique characteristics. They contain the pigment hemoglobin which is made up of iron with porphyrin ring, similar to the pigment chlorophyll found in plants whose main function is to absorb light and act as photoreceptors. The RBCs may exhibit photoreceptive properties; however, the phrase ‘talk to each other’ should be rephrased scientifically and other haemolymphatic cells through Biophotons of nano-scale dimensions. The high iron content make them to behave as magneto-receptors, by which birds and animals navigate and behave differently in electromagnetic fields. Human RBC’s also have the magneto-reception property, rather it is weak portant Behavior of RBC’s magneto and photo-receptors is observed in Transcendental or meditational state, when during controlled breathing , the oxygen content of hemoglobin goes up and this phenomenon is hypothesized to affect magnetoreception; however, its link to consciousness requires further scientific validation [26].

Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann’s early observations on the effects of highly diluted medicines have now found validation in modern nanoscience. His meticulous methods of preparation, extending beyond Avogadro’s limit, anticipated what contemporary researchers have discovered—homeopathically potentized remedies contain nanoparticles that exhibit measurable biological activity. The findings from studies conducted at institutions such as Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Agra, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, and other leading research centers have confirmed the presence of nanoparticles in homeopathic dilutions up to 200C potency, with concentrations ranging from 1 - 4000 picograms/milliliter and particle sizes between 5 - 100 nanometers.

This nanoparticles perspective offers a scientifically plausible explanation for the efficacy of homeopathic medicines, demonstrating that these nanoparticles can interact with biological systems at the cellular and molecular levels. The concept of hormesis—where ultra-low doses of a substance can elicit a biological response—provides further support for the mechanism underlying homeopathic treatments (The concept of hormesis describes a dose-response phenomenon observed in biology. Claims regarding ‘dramatic’ or ‘super healing’ properties of homeopathic medicines require further rigorous scientific validation). Research has shown that even at extreme dilutions, homeopathic nanoparticles can stimulate gene expression, modulate immune responses, and influence metabolic pathways. Therefore, modern medicine, with its macromolecular pharmacology at one end of spectrum and Nanomedicine/vital force (in Homeopathy) at other end of spectrum with different physio-chemical properties and efficacies for the management of ill health are indispensable and interdependent on each other. The connecting string between them is known as Integrated Medicine. This is much like to what String Theory provides explanation between Quantum Physics versus Classical Physics or Macrocosm versus Microcosm or Omni-Quantum Spiritual Force Field tells about Infinitesimally small to Infinitely large creation , with the ultimate wisdom, reality and truth of Ab Initio (Ab Aeterno) to Ad Infinitum. The Scientific basis of Esoteric Healing (‘Esoteric Healing’ and ‘healing at the spiritual level’ are terms used to describe traditional beliefs in spiritual or meditational healing, and are presented as Integrated care perspectives as per WHO definition of health which has included spiritual domain of health along with physical, mental and social health) and role of Meditational Spiritual Intercession and recovery from diseases [27], particularly life-threatening disorders such as severe acute respiratory illnesses [28], and life style disorders, and also including palliative care in terminal illnesses, provides insight beyond nanoscale medicine i.e., healing at spiritual level [29], (Healing described as occurring at the spiritual level is understood within the context of meditational and faith-based practices. While various studies have explored these effects, further validation remains an area of ongoing research) as done in various studies conducted at Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Dayalbagh, Agra, India.
